2nd October

Dear Supporters

Thanks to you all for signing the petition to stop the Colac Otway Shire proceeding with the sale of 69 McLachlan Street. Many of you attended the photo shoot at the old Preschool site on the 20 September and thanks to your support, over 120 people attended at just 24 hours’ notice. Thank you also to those who phoned Councillors prior to the 27 September Council meeting.

As you know, at the August Council meeting, Councillors resolved to sell the site, but Cr Costin immediately lodged a rescission motion to halt the sale.

Last week, in Colac, at the 27 September Council meeting, the petitions of over 900 signatures were tabled. Council rules state that petitions can be tabled but not discussed until the following Council meeting unless they relate to an agenda item of that meeting. In this case the agenda item was Cr Costin’s rescission motion.

However, at the beginning of the Council meeting, Cr Costin withdrew his rescission motion regarding the sale of 69 McLachlan Street. While the reasons for the withdrawal are unclear, we have been told that it relates to some confidential information released to Councillors just before the meeting which is not permitted to be discussed outside of Council at this time.

Cr Costin’s withdrawal means that our petition must be considered at the next meeting for Councillor debate. We now can further discuss the issue with Councillors prior to the meeting and ask questions at the next Council meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday 25th October in Apollo Bay.

The ABCV committee has begun the necessary preparation for this forthcoming meeting and will be in touch again prior to 25 October to seek your support and attendance.

Monday's ABC article is here.
