The Apollo Bay Art Show is proud to be celebrating its 40th Anniversary exhibition this summer.
There are a few changes to make note of this year. To celebrate 40 years we are having a double venue show.
This year we have added 3D Sculpture and Photography to the list of mediums. This decision was made to make our show inclusive of all artists and to celebrate their varied talents in a broader range of mediums. The committee are very excited about how the show will look this year.

Rainforest Walk - Maits Rest
All animals have three basic needs: food, water and shelter. Join a ranger and discover unique ways the bush can provide these survival essentials.
The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA) has recently released the Corangamite Natural Resource Management Plan for Climate Change.
The Plan uses current climate change data from sources such as CSIRO to understand local impacts and develop climate change adaptation plans.
The plan covers current climate science, vulnerability assessments of natural assets and discusses regional and catchment scale actions for responding to climate change and anticipated impacts.
Chris Pitfield from the CCMA will be presenting on the findings of this document.

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the Krambruk Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker: Kylie Bawden, Keeper, Werribee Open Range Zoo Topic: “Lions and Tigers and… Baw Baw Frogs! Oh My!”
Kylie Bawden is a Keeper at Werribee Open Range Zoo, and is rather surprised to find that 18 years have slipped by since she began doing this. She currently works with carnivores there: Lions, African Wild Dogs and Meerkats, with sporadic visits to Gorillas to maintain cousinly ties. She has worked at all three of Victoria’s Zoos, with time at both Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary where she was involved with the Recovery Program for the Mountain Pygmy Possum.
Zoos are one of the places we go for a great family day out. Right? Join Kylie as she reflects on the journey our Zoos have taken in their current ambition to be leading Zoo-based conservation organizations. At a time when our wild places are feeling the pressure from human activity, Zoos Victoria have made a public declaration to protect 21 terrestrial Victorian species threatened with extinction. Come along and hear about the work being done to save the Eastern Barred Bandicoot with the help of some canine friends, as well as the local and global community conservation programs we’re passionately getting our hands dirty tackling.

If you would like to volunteer some time to help in our junior school classrooms (such as listening to children read, helping with spelling or writing), we are on the hunt.
Thursday the 9th of March from 9-10am there will be an adult helpers training session to give you a basic understanding of how to work with the children in accordance with the programs we use. It will also give you confidence in how to help them out!

U3A Apollo Bay and the Apollo Bay & District Historical Society are pleased to offer a repeat showing of “Women at Work: Barbara Leorke and Val Flitton in Conversation”.

Barbara and Val discuss their family histories, their childhood and youth in Apollo Bay, the war years, bringing up families, their community activities and the social changes they have seen since the 1920s.
The in-medical centre hearing checks are non-invasive and take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The test involves people listening for sounds while wearing headphones.
In Australia, one in six people has some form of hearing loss and this rate doubles for those over the age of 61. However, on average, most people wait seven years before seeking help.
People with hearing loss may experience tinnitus, known as a ringing sensation in the ears. Other key signs include difficulty hearing people on the phone and asking others to repeat themselves.
During the 15-minute consultation, people will learn their results plus receive advice on what to do next. This may include an invitation to attend a full hearing assessment with a clinician, available at no cost to Australian pensioners.
For people who already have a hearing aid fitted, a free hearing aid health check will also be available.
An important public meeting will be held to try to end Apollo Bay's 24/7 accident and emergency crisis.

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the Krambruk Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker - Dr Libby Riches, Manager, Southern Otway Landcare Network Topic - “People and Place - Making Maps For Communities”
Maps are powerful tools. When you put a map in front of someone you open up the conversation about their relationship with the places they value. However, most maps that communities see have been created by others: maps of planning schemes, development applications, masterplans, environmental management priorities and the like. These maps have been created by others (typically individuals or agencies with resources and or regulatory powers) as a guide to how will they manage places. Sometimes maps likes this become places of conflict because community values are not represented and we see decision making occurring without our input.
Participatory Mapping is an approach to mapping that allows community to openly express what they value about place. Often what people want to map is messy - it's stories, memories, knowledge and attachments. Another approach, Social Significance Assessment, is a tool that can be attached to mapping to help capture these relationships with place and ultimately represent them on a map.
Libby Riches researched methods for Participatory Mapping approaches to understanding Indigenous relationship to place as part of her PhD thesis. She then moved into professional consultancy undertaking Social Significance Assessments as places such at Lake Condah / Budj Bim National Heritage Place and Sydney's White Bay Power Station. Libby now manages the Southern Otway Landcare Network and is about to start applying these methods to a community mapping project. In this presentation she will be talking about methods for mapping people's relationship to place, her mapping project with Landcare, and the opportunities and challenges that are faced when using these maps to participate in decision making.

Apollo Bay P-12 College has been conducting International trips with our students for the last 10 years. Groups have travelled to India, Tanzania, Borneo and the Maldives. The trips are lead and organised by the students, with students working and fundraising all of the funds required to complete their trip.
At this discussion group session you will hear Brian Humphries talk about the journey over the last 10 years and show photographs of each of the trips as well as hearing from several students who have just returned from our most recent trip to India and the Maldives. The students will show a collection of photographs and short films from their trip as well as explaining what it was like to travel in India and also live in a Muslim community in the Maldives.

After four months of Trump’s presidency, it is vital that we don't start treating it as "normal". It is anything but.
The Trump presidency's abnormality goes much deeper than sloppy staff work, silly posturings, blatant contradictions, and untrue statements. It goes to the foundations of democracy. I'll focus on the nature of those foundations; how the Trump presidency undermines them; and, especially, how the rapidly ramifying "Russian Connection" of the Trump presidency threatens to become the greatest legal and constitutional crisis America has faced since President Nixon's "Watergate".
Ray Nichols was a Wilson and Danforth Scholar at Princeton, and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He taught at the University of California before moving to Monash University, where he was Professor and Head of the Department of Politics. He has written extensively on political ideas and action, has broadcast regularly on the ABC and Radio Singapore, and has led several community action groups.

Colac Otway Shire Council is about to start consultations with artists, event organisers, education providers, stakeholders, businesses and community groups to inform a new Arts and Culture Strategy.
The creation of a new strategy will reflect the opportunities and aspirations of communities across the Shire and provide guidance to Council around how to best support its creative industries, attractions and events.
Residents are invited to attend one of the community roundtables and contribute to the discussion around what arts and culture could look like for Colac Otway.

In support of Winter Wild, Apollo Bay Rural Australians for Refugees (ABRAR) is excited to be hosting a Midwinter Magic Picnic for all children and young-at-heart in Apollo Bay.
June 18th–24th is Refugee Week, and we decided to celebrate our children, and how lucky we are to have them, while at the same time remembering the children fleeing from war and displaced around the world.
Everyone can do something to help others, and we are confident that our children will go on to do great things. But children also need fun and excitement, so this is our gift for them.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your age, but all children must be accompanied by an adult – adults don’t need to be accompanied by a child!

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker: Heather Kiley Topic: ‘Things you may not know about Antarctica’
If you have ever wondered ‘who owns Antarctica’, ‘are there any plants there’, ‘how cold and how hot does it get’ or ‘what’s underneath all that ice’, this is the talk for you. Heather will give an overview of some of the most interesting aspects of this enigmatic white continent, including weather, geography, wildlife and the environment – some things may surprise you.
Heather holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science Honours, (Wildlife and Conservation Biology), with her research paper focusing on conservation psychology. During her studies in 2012, she visited the Antarctic Peninsula and this inspired her to complete a Post-graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies based in New Zealand. During this course she spent three weeks living on the Ross Ice Shelf and working at Scott Base. Since then Heather has been employed as a Park Ranger, an onboard naturalist for New Zealand’s Southern Ocean expeditions, and is currently working for WWF Australia.

Colac Otway Shire Council Meeting @ Apollo Bay Community Centre
WinterWild is an arts festival running over 4 weekends - every second weekend between July 1 to August 12. It is being supported by Regional Development Victoria.
Each Saturday night of the 4 weekends will feature the lighting of a large bonfire in a beautiful brazier that has been commissioned for this purpose. There will be free, public entertainment on the foreshore.
Acts will be hosted on Saturday Nights at the Mechanics Institute. These will be ticketed events and will include dance, opera, music, film and other performance arts. Other acts will be featured in the pubs and smaller venues.
Each weekend is based around an elemental theme: Water, Earth, Air, Fire.
A large sculpture has been erected on the foreshore that community and visitors are invited to contribute items to. On the last night of the festival, the sculpture will be set alight.
WinterWild will be facilitating mid week community dinners across the six weeks - a chance for community to come together and share.
WinterWild is a fringe arts festival inspired by events such as White Night and Dark MoFo. Programming content (especially ticketed events in the Mechanics Institute) is pitched at an adult audience.

WinterWild is back.
The second weekend of this winter-long festival is themed with the element of Earth. Join us this Saturday for another two days of wild bonfires, dark tunes, earthy workshops and recovery sessions - all designed to drag you out of your comfort zone and into the wild.

Four years ago Kevin Rudd announced that people coming to Australia by boat, seeking asylum, would be placed in detention on Manus and Nauru, with no hope of ever settling here.
Everyone is invited to join us in marking this shameful anniversary.
Gather at the Wildwood Tree on the Foreshore (where the market is held).
Bring a candle to light and spend a few minutes reflecting on the sad fates of those people held in offshore detention. Dav will play for us – bring your guitars to join in.

Richard is the One Identity Country Manager for Australia & New Zealand with more than 35 years in the software industry, predominantly in the security and communications sectors. He was formerly the Professional Services Manager for Dell Software in Australia and New Zealand and has held various roles in strategy, sales, marketing, product management and project management in Australia, Asia and the US and has worked for companies such as Philips, Attachmate, ActivCard, ANZ, CGU, and Dell Software as well as raising money and founding startups.

WinterWild Festival Apollo Bay - Air Apollo Bay Writers Festival
Apollo Bay Writers Festival is a literary event for readers and writers in the Otway region and beyond. Hosting a mix of local writers and performers alongside writers and performers from the larger literary community the event aims to enhance the literary culture of the region and connect it with the wider world of literature.
Open Mic session with wine, cheese, tasty finger food and great company and entertainment. Songs, poetry and music including with local identities Christy Cooney, Linda Cooney, Meralyn Stewart, Louis Hesterman, Phil Langdon, Deb Bradfield, Stephanie Falcone, Matt Armstrong and Dav Rees.
The RSL Bar will be open for purchase of wine, beer and soft drink. Coffee and tea provided.
If you would also like to sing, play music or recite poetry please let us know when you arrive!
Raffle tickets will also be being sold to raise funds for the Arts Inc Community Printing Press Project. The prizes are a framed painting or a framed pastel by Cathy Donovan. The raffle will be drawn on the last Sunday of Winter Wild at the Arts Inc Gallery.

The Apollo Bay Community Choir is holding a concert on Sunday 13th August at Star Of The Sea Catholic Church, 1 Nelson St, Apollo Bay from 2pm to 4pm.
This event is run in conjunction with the WinterWild Festival and includes The Seasonal Singers, The Colac Offshoot Choir & The Deans Marsh Singers.
We invite anyone who is interested to attend and join us for afternoon tea after the concert.

A large sculpture has been erected on the foreshore that community and visitors will be invited to contribute items to. On the last night of the festival, the sculpture will be set alight.
WinterWild is a fringe arts festival inspired by events such as White Night and Dark MoFo. Programming content (especially ticketed events in the Mechanics Institute) is pitched at an adult audience.

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker: Dr Brenda Fitzpatrick Topic: “Aspects of International Law and some of the heroic people involved”
Dr Brenda Fitzpatrick worked for many years with international humanitarian agencies, based in Geneva, London and Australia and travelling extensively to war zones, refugee camps and a range of emergency situations. Her role was to report to international donors, governments, the UN and other policy and decision makers. She will talk about the many heroic people she met and some often ignored aspects of international law which she believes demand attention. She has published many articles and a book on what happens to civilians - particularly, but not exclusively, women and girls in war and conflict. She has a PhD in International politics. She has also worked as a teacher and with troubled kids in care in Melbourne.

Stef's Book Launch & Martine's Drawings @ Hello Coffee
Another night of poetry, art, music, food and drink in Apollo Bay.
Gareth and Justin at Hello Coffee are hosting the launch of Stef Falconer's (Stephanie Hickey Smith's) fabulous new poetry book.
Stef will be reciting her poems and singing her songs; Lily Falconer will be playing violin and there will be an exhibition of Martine Whitcroft's art and drawings, some of which are featured in the book.
A number of local poets will warm up the Springtime audience with their poems.
Stef who is now resident in Marengo after 7 years in Johanna has been songwriting and performing for 35 years. Through those years her folio of notes, scribbled verses and lyrics have accumulated. Her friends have been urging her to publish and thanks to local publisher FILM BOOKS ANYTHING that has now happened.
The book titled “Come Outside” resonates with humour and seriousness, love and sadness and explores the ups and downs of a life lived through great happiness and severe hardship. Stef also makes some strong protests about unfairness in her work.
Nattie Murray, who is helping to organise the event, says the stories “have made me cry and burst out laughing in about equal measure. I love the fact that it has been produced locally and that we have a group of other local poets coming along to share in our first Poets Party.”
During the night a number of local poets will read one of their own poems and then their favourite from Stef’s book.
FILM BOOKS ANYTHING will also be collecting local poets works and building them into an Apollo Bay Poets Anthology in time for the Festive Season distribution.

It is with great pleasure that we announce a new community initiative which we hope will interest every Apollo Bay resident.
From September 7th the Chamber of Commerce (in harmony with our wonderful Community Discussion group) will hold a Question & Answer panel discussion at the bottom pub. The program will be conducted along the lines of the ABC’s high rating Q&A program. Everyone is invited to join us in this FREE event from 7pm to 9 pm. Meals and drinks will be available if desired and you will be welcome to ask the guest speakers and moderator, the venerable Bob Knowles, any questions relating to the topic. The theme of all Q&A Sessions will be the economic future of Apollo Bay and our region.
On September 7th we are delighted to introduce the question is “The Apollo Bay Fishing Village - Fact or Fallacy?” Speakers will include local fish cooperative members Nick Polgeest (Chair, Apollo Bay Fishing Cooperative) and Markus Nolle (Chair, Seafood Industry Victoria and local cray fisher person) and Wayne Diffey from Apollo Bay Surf ‘N Fish will present the amateur fisher person perspective. We are also working to include an academic from Deakin University to further liven up the discussion.
These speakers will give an overview of past and present initiatives in our local fishing industry and discuss the future trends and potentials for fishing both here and in the wider Victorian context. Please join us on the 7th September at the Bottom Pub.

Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker: Lizzie Corke & Jack Pascoe from Conservation Ecology Centre Topic: The New Ecotourism Venture and the Conservation Program
The Conservat ion Ecology Centre works to develop and deliver solutions to the most urgent conservation challenges in the Otways region. Dr Jack Pascoe, Conservation & Research Manager will provide an update on the Centre’s recent work, particularly in threatened species research and ecological burning, as well as plans for the next stages of conservation in the Otways.
While the CEC works extremely effectively for such a small organisation, far more work is required in order to combat the ecological challenges our region faces. With this in mind CEC has been working to create a social enterprise to help build capacity – to develop a sustainable and reliable funding stream for conservation in the Otways. Lizzie Corke, Chief Executive, will share more details about this project – what it will mean for our community and how CEC plans to bring it to reality.
Lizzie Corke, with Shayne Neal, established the CEC in order to develop and deliver solutions to the most urgent conservation challenges in the Otways. With a background in natural sciences she works to facilitate this important work through supporting a team committed to effective conservation and organisational development, building partnerships and engaging our community. This work was recognised by the Australian Geographic Society Conservation Award in 2007.
Ecotourism plays a critical role in the organisation’s funding and programs. The Centre established the Great Ocean Ecolodge in 2004, winning Victorian Tourism Awards for best new development. It is recognised by National Geographic Traveller as one of the 25 best ecolodges in the world. A key area of focus is the development of ‘Wildlife Wonders’, a social enterprise ecotourism venture on the GOR. It will provide opportunities for conservation and sustainable economic development of the region.
Lizzie is a Director of Ecotourism Australia, Chair of the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority Community Advisory Group and the recipient of the 2005 Prime Minister’s Award for Environmentalist of the Year.
Jack Pascoe joined the Conservation Ecology Centre in 2012 to manage the ever-growing Conservation and Research Program. Jack grew up at Cape Otway before studying Environmental Science at Deakin University and completing a PhD with the University of Western Sydney where he studied the predators of the Blue Mountains. His key fields of interest are the ecology of apex predators and fire. Jack has also worked with one of our project partners, the Southern Otway Landcare Network, focusing on mitigating the impacts of pest plants and animals. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Otway Community Conservation Network, President of the Hordern Vale Glenaire Landcare Group and Chair of the Southern Otway Landcare Network’s Projects Committee. He has previously advised the Minister for Environment and Climate on the management of Cape Otway’s koalas. Jack is a Yuin man, and is passionate about restoring the productive systems in Gadubanud country where CEC operations are based.

How can local communities respond help disaster recovery?
When a disaster strikes, whether it be bushfire, flood, landslip or other, emergency services need to work in partnership with the local community to get the best result for all.
Landcare has both organisational abilities and an engaged, skilled and connected membership which would be an asset to the community in the recovery phase of a disaster. The Wild Dog and Skenes Creek valleys in particular are identified hotspots for community lead recovery planning.
Landcare does not have any official role or responsibility in this space, and is often unknown , overlooked or used ad hoc at best.
This workshop is to talk in that space, as an engaged community, in partnership with responsible agencies (Colac Otway Shire, Emergency Management Victoria, CFA) to discuss how community skills can be recognised and accessed in response to disaster recovery.
You do not have to be a Landcare member to attend.
Apollo Bay Discussion Group @ the SS Casino Room, Apollo Bay Hotel Guest Speaker: Para Paheer & Ali Corke Topic: "The Power of Good People, Surviving Sri Lanka's Civil War"
On 1st November 2009, local author and refugee supporter Ali Corke heard on the radio that a tiny fishing boat carrying asylum seekers had sunk in the Indian Ocean. Saddened and worried by the human tragedy of this event, Ali had no idea that soon she would become pen friends with Para, one of the survivors taken to Christmas Island Detention Centre. After exchanging hundreds of letters with Para, Ali heard that he could be released into community detention, providing he stayed with a family. Shortly afterwards, Ali and her husband Charlie met Para at Melbourne Airport – the start of an extraordinary adventure and friendship. Para still lives with the Corke family, and they have just celebrated his reunion with his wife and ten-year-old son – after eight years of enforced separation.
From the beginning, Para shared stories of his life and his longing to find the Captain of the massive ship that rescued him. He often spoke of the people he had met who helped him – some in small but significant ways, and others in heroic attempts that, in at least one case, cost them their lives.
In 2011, Para and Ali started to write his story. Finally, it is finished. ‘The Power of Good People’ was published on 1st November 2017 – exactly eight years after the shipwreck in which 13 people drowned, yet 27 were saved.
Para and Ali have just returned from a trip to the UK where they met the senior management of the shipping company that owns the tanker that saved Para. And in Croatia, Para spoke at the company’s annual conference and finally met and thanked the Captain and crew who saved him.
‘The Power of Good People’ will be launched in Geelong by Julian Burnside on 18th November, and in Melbourne by Gillian Triggs on 10th December.

CANCELLED - Apollo Bay Sailing Club Monthly Fundraiser BBQ @ Apollo Bay Sailing Club - Overlooking the Harbour
Really sorry, but we have to CANCEL the proposed post-sailing bbq/pasta afternoon. Unfortunately the number of RSVP’s with an ‘Intent Of Attendance’ was less than 20 persons and we need at least 40 participants to make it a viable fundraiser.
We will aim for a later date –most likely 16 December 2017 (will let you know ASAP). The weather is against us and has undoubtedly contributed to the low number.
This sailing season the Apollo Bay Sailing Club is organising a series of BBQs with the aim to raise funds towards our desperately needed new duty boat.
We are inviting everyone to come and join in on our BBQ. A chance to chat to us, a chance to grab a bite to eat while supporting one of your local community groups.
What You Will Get
A Gourmet BBQ, including varieties of salads, meats, fish, and desserts, organised by our culunairy sailing team Heather and Angelika as well as a chance so socialise with our community sailors.

YOUR SUPPORT towards the Apollo Bay Sailing Club.
What It Will Cost You
In exchange for this three course BBQ, which will certainly replace your need to cook your own dinner, we kindly ask a donation of $15 adults and $10 for under 18.
We only ask you to let us know in advance if you wish to come and dine with us.

Apollo Bay P-12 College Art Show 2017 @ the College Library
Showcasing this year’s artworks for VCE students in Studio Arts and Media.
Junior School works include skate decks by Year 3 & 4 students, prints and finger puppets by Year 5&6 and some collage work by Prep & 1 students.
The exhibition can be viewed from 9am-4pm weekdays up until the 19th of December in the College Library. There aren’t any students in that building this week so it’s very peaceful viewing!
Please come along to see what the town's younger artists are capable of - it's very impressive.

Apollo Bay Sailing Club Movie Night @ the Sailing Club
This season the Apollo Bay Sailing club will host a series of movie nights in the harbour accessible to the public as one of our FUNDRAISERS for the club.
The screenings chosen feature sailing documentaries that contain story lines of hardship, adventures, and rites of passage.
The location will be the Apollo Bay Sailing Club Clubhouse in the Apollo Bay Harbour near the boatramp.

Most people conduct some form of financial transactions online. Chances are if you’re not doing so already, you will have to in the next five years, as companies and government move towards modernising services.
Dr Brenda Fitzpatrick worked for many years with international humanitarian agencies, based in Geneva, London and Australia and travelling extensively to war zones, refugee camps and a range of emergency situations. Her role was to report to international donors, governments, the UN and other policy and decision makers. She will talk about the many heroic people she met and some often ignored aspects of international law which she believes demand attention. She has published many articles and a book on what happens to civilians - particularly, but not exclusively, women and girls in war and conflict. She has a PhD in International politics. She has also worked as a teacher and with troubled kids in care in Melbourne.
