Apollo Bay harbour dredging project update

Important dredging work to improve safety at the Apollo Bay harbour is continuing with approximately 20% of the dredging envelope now dredged to the target depth of -3.5 metres.
Manager of the Port of Apollo Bay Simon McBeth said the project is on track and progressing well toward improving access and function of the harbour.
“Siltation of harbour had been identified as the most significant issue for Port users and stakeholders toward the continuing viability of the Port. This dredging project addresses that issue and Council is pleased with progress of work so far.
“As expected, the dredging work has resulted in dark and muddy coloured water and sediments in the plume and along surrounding beaches.
“Council appreciates that while work is in progress, the area isn’t very pleasant to look at, however we wish to reassure the community that sediments have been tested and are safe for humans or animals to come into contact.
“Council is also monitoring water quality with tests undertaken daily; to date all tests have indicated results below threshold levels.
“Once the dredging operations are complete, the water and sand discolouration is expected to dissipate within 72 hours, so while there is some inconvenience in the short term, the long term benefits for the community, our fishing industry and tourism will have significant positive flow on effects for years to come.
“It’s expected that the project will take another six to eight weeks to complete.”
Mr McBeth said signs providing general information to the community on the project and impact of works had been installed at the harbour and various beach access points.
“Signs have been installed at key areas to ensure beach users are informed of the details of the project and the impact works may have. I encourage any member of the community who would like further information on the dredging project to give me a call on 5232 9400.”
The Apollo Bay harbour dredging project was funded by a $1.05-million State Government grant through the Department of Transport.
