Colac Otway supports construction of a path along Birregurra’s Roadknight Street

Colac’s Otway Shire Council will consider funding options for the construction of a path along Birregurra’s Roadknight Street as part of Council’s 2020/21 budget.
Colac Otway Shire Mayor Cr Jason Schram said that Council supported construction of a footpath along Roadknight Street, which has increasing pedestrian and traffic, and acknowledged it was a priority for the community.
“Birregurra is a vibrant community that has shown significant growth and extra train services in recent years.
“Council had prepared a business case on a 2.5-metre-wide shared pathway to accommodate off-road cycling as well as pedestrians, for consideration in next year’s budget,” Cr Schram said.
“Council then received a petition from the community calling for construction of a 1.5-metre-wide footpath along Roadknight Street.
“Councillors agreed unanimously to consider four pathway construction options as part of its 2020/21 Budget deliberations.
“Officers will prepare business cases for a complete 1.5-metre path, a complete 2.5-metre path, and partial options which would allow either path design to be constructed in stages dependant on budget considerations.
“Council previously applied for funding for a pathway along Roadknight Street in 2017 through the TAC and was unsuccessful, however Council has been successful in gaining funding for a footpath in Skenes Creek in 2016 and a shared path in Forrest in 2019.
“In addition to budget considerations, Council will continue to apply for external grant opportunities for construction of a pathway in Birregurra to assist with funding the project,” he said.
“Improved infrastructure in our smaller town is a focus of this council.”
