Community groups share in $145,000 of funding

Events in Apollo Bay will be at the next level of professionalism thanks to a $5000 grant from Colac Otway Shire Council’s annual Community Funding Program.
The Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce attracted funding through the program’s Community Projects category for a professional staging system to be used at local events, and the Chamber is one of 60 projects to share in $142,010 of grants.
The Community Funding Program is allocated in four categories – COPACC Hire Assistance, Recreation Facilities, Small Equipment and Training, and Community Projects.
Mayor Chris Potter said the professional staging system, which would enable existing and new community events to be hosted around Apollo Bay, was just one of a diverse range of projects successful in this year’s program.
“Council’s support of community not-for-profit groups to deliver their projects, such as facility or equipment upgrades, artistic and cultural projects, membership growth, group development and community improvement initiatives helps them make our shire more vibrant and progressive.
“The projects undertaken through the grants are broad in their nature, but their social and cultural impact is matched by a significant economic return of more than $595,000 through works and activities to be undertaken as part of the grants,” he said.
Cr Potter said highlights from this year’s program included $3190 for Colac’s Driver Reviver program to build a shelter for an open deck area, protecting an anticipated 4000 weary visiting drivers annually from the elements.
In the Recreation Facilities category, the Hordern Vale – Glenaire Hall and Recreation Reserve Committee received $5000 toward their Clean Water Project to restore a safe and reliable water supply to the hall allowing the venue to be reactivated for regular use by the community.
The Colac Players will showcase a musical cabaret in May 2018 at COPACC thanks to a COPACC Assistance Grant, which was also received by Colac Woodcrafters Guild and Colac Music Teachers Association among others.
Cr Potter congratulated this year’s successful applicants and said he looked forward to not only seeing their projects transpire but the enjoyment of such programs being shared with the community.
An official presentation to recipients will take place during a Civic Reception at COPACC on Friday, 28 July 2017.
