Council allocates $75,000 to fund festivals and events
July 6, 2016

Movie goers will enjoy viewing an imaginative family film under the stars at 'Forrest Flicks', thanks to a $1500 grant from Colac Otway Shire Council's Festival and Event Support Scheme.

The screening of the award winning movie Paper Planes will be introduced by James Norton and Dylan Parker, the two professional paper plane throwers that inspired the making of the film, following paper plane making workshops and a 'fly-off' in the afternoon.

The festival is one of 31 community events that will share in up to $75,000 in funding as part of Council's annual Festival and Event Support Scheme.

Mayor Frank Buchanan said the support scheme improved access to quality festivals and events which brought the community together, enriched quality of life and celebrated cultural diversity.

"Festivals and events are known to promote a sense of pride and community identity, encourage innovation and creativity, while also attracting visitors and strong economic returns to our shire," he said.

"The economic impact festivals and events bring to the shire is many times the actual funding amount."

The support scheme helps grow existing events and assists with the establishment of new events initiatives.

Cr Buchanan said along with funding popular large events - $5000 for the Birregurra Weekend Festival, Apollo Bay Seafood and Produce Festival and the Colac Kana Festival, Council was pleased to provide funding to several innovative community events.

The Birregurra Community Arts Group received $2000 to host a 'pop-up' gallery at the Birregurra Hall during the January holiday period.

"The gallery will display and sell locally produced works and children and adults can be inspired to create their own masterpieces by participating in hands on arts based workshops that will be provided throughout the duration of the exhibition," Cr Buchanan said.

Gellibrand Community Group received $2000 to run three new community markets annually. These markets are in addition to the popular Blues and Blueberry Festival market held in February.

Cr Buchanan said visitors would be able to sample local crafts and produce and each market will focus on a seasonal theme.

"I'd like to thank and congratulate all the festival and event organisers who have received funding.

An official presentation to recipients will take place at a civic reception at COPACC on Friday 22 July.
