Council contributes to regional Victoria Commonwealth Games bid study

Colac Otway Shire Council will contribute $3000 towards a study aimed at attracting the 2030 Commonwealth Games to regional Victoria.
The Greater Shepparton City Council is coordinating a pre-feasibility study on behalf of rural and regional councils across the state.
Mayor Joe McCracken said the prospect of the 2030 Commonwealth Games being held across Victoria presented some tremendous opportunities for Colac Otway.
“We have world-class mountain biking trails as well as some of the most picturesque roads in Australia that could host walking, running and cycling events,” Cr McCracken said.
“Hosting the Commonwealth Games across regional Victoria would present significant economic and social opportunities, and Council believes our contribution to the pre-feasibility study is an important first step.”
The pre-feasibility study will cost $80,000, with the State Government contributing $30,000 and the remainder to come from rural and regional Victorian councils.
A report tabled at Council’s November meeting said that the State Government saw the Commonwealth Games project as an opportunity to partner with regional councils.
“There’s no doubt that regional Victoria has an enormous amount to offer, not just in terms of its sporting facilities but as a great place to visit and explore,” Cr McCracken said.
“Colac Otway is pleased to be a partner in this important first step of the investigation.”
