Have Your Say on Council’s Draft Flag Policy

March 28, 2024

Council currently has its draft Flag Policy on exhibition and is inviting community feedback.

Mayor Marg White said with the installation of a new ‘community flagpole’ in the COPACC precinct, Council was keen to hear community views on its use.

“A new flagpole is being installed outside COPACC, which creates an opportunity for Council to mark and acknowledge dates that are important to different sections of our community,” Cr White said.

“The parade at Kana each year is a terrific example of celebrating our community, the new flagpole is another opportunity for our community to gather together and fly flags that demonstrate our pride of place and spirit in Colac Otway.

“We’re encouraging people to provide feedback on the draft policy to help guide use of the community flagpole for local recognition and celebrations,” Cr White said.

Council currently has three existing flagpoles at the Colac Customer Service Centre in Rae Street which fly the Australian Flag, Aboriginal Flag and Torres Straight Islander Flag.

The draft Flag Policy has been developed to guide Council’s flying of other flags of significance and to provide a framework for compliance with the Australian Government’s federal flag protocols.

Council’s draft Flag Policy is currently open with the community invited to provide feedback. Visit Council’s website and click ‘Have Your Say’ from the homepage. Submissions close Friday 12 April at 5pm.
