Council’s Fire Awareness Officer, Tristan Crews said Colac Otway Shire has designated Bushfire Places of Last Resort – Neighbourhood Safer Place sites in Apollo Bay, Barwon Downs, Beeac, Beech Forest, Birregurra, Cressy and Gellibrand.

“Bushfire Places of Last Resort - Neighbourhood Safer Places - are typically an open space, such as an oval, that have been assessed as providing adequate protection from the radiant heat of a bushfire, and are a last resort place for community members and visitors to go if bushfire survival plans have failed.

“Signage is being updated at each site, explaining the purpose and exact location, with a focus on being more user-friendly. The signs inform people what to expect, what to take with them, and what is not provided at the site,” Mr Crews said.

Similar signage is being rolled out across the Surf Coast and Corangamite Shires.

Signs will be installed in all locations through Colac Otway Shire by the end of this week, prior to the 2019-20 Fire Danger Period commencing on 9 December 2019.
