Transition Apollo Bay – What’s Next?

It’s been a few weeks since the Transition Apollo Bay Forum which was held with great success on May 6. The primary objective of the day was to identify and discuss a range of transitional ideas and projects, gauge interest in those ideas and forge a way forward for the most viable. Since then we have gathered our thoughts and developed a plan so we don’t lose the great momentum already generated.
To recap on the outcomes of the Forum, there were twelve ideas or projects raised:
Establishment of a community power system;
Positioning Apollo Bay as an “Artisan Coast” ie, a community of artisans with specialist knowledge encompassing research, farming, artists, ceramics, trades, timber etc.
Development of a closed waste system utilising all the waste in the town;
Establishment of a community social enterprise that would attract funding and resources and return profit to fund other projects;
Creation of a community skills and volunteer register;
Introduction of commercial farming of seaweed as a new local industry;
Find a resolution to the local long-term housing crisis in the community;
Reclaim Heathfield Estate for public use;
Creation of a formalised knowledge and skills transfer system;
Facilitate the local production and processing of food and fibre;
Creation of a repair café; and
Bringing a greater focus to organic agriculture to the region.
These ideas were discussed at length and built-upon in break-out groups. At the completion of the session, they were voted upon by all present to get a sense of the level of interest in the room for each.
