Equity and Diversity in our Community; Pick My Project Update
Equity and Diversity in our Community

Marrar Woorn is delighted to be working with Otway Health Campus of GORH to develop a series of community programs focussing on equity and diversity in our region. We had our first meeting on Monday 12th August and brainstormed a lot of ideas that will help us develop a 3 year program of events. We will be meeting again in October to discuss ideas and funding for a range of programs to support a better understanding of our LGBTIQ community and the Indigenous heritage of the region. Later down the track we will focus on programs with those in our community where English is a second language as well as looking at pro-social activities for our senior community members and promoting positive mental health for all.

It’s quite a large project, and we would love your input.

Please join us at our next meeting on Monday 14th October from 2-3pm at Marrar Woorn.

Pick My Project Update

A Marrar Woorn, Otway Health Campus of GORH and Colac Otway Shire joint project

Improvements to the Seniors Hall are underway with the new windows throughout the building scheduled to be installed in September/October. We are working with user groups through bi-monthly meetings of the Seniors Hall User Group Committee to ensure minimal interruptions to ongoing bookings. The kitchen has been upgraded to all stainless steel benches, with new cupboards, a new, larger stove and oven and a stainless steel island bench. We have replaced the old, heavy chairs with 100 new ones that are easy to stack and are comfortable to stay seated in for long periods of time. We have new folding tables on wheels coming soon that are easy to store, so we can better accommodate different usage of the hall.

I would like to thank all of the user groups of the hall, who have been working together as we sort through access, storage and usage issues as they arise.

Next on the list of improvements will see the painting and re-carpeting of the front two rooms and the Maternal Health Nurse will move from the meeting room to the office space. The current storage rooms will be remodelled to maximise space and the toilets will also receive a much needed remodelling thanks to extra funds from the Colac Otway Shire. New heating/cooling units in the 3 main rooms will be installed and the correct solar system for the hall is being investigated. The much anticipated community cinema aspect of the project will be delivered later in the year and include a laser projector, sound system and retractable screen mounted behind the existing beam over the stage.

We would like to thank the Colac Otway Shire for their support of this project in the 2019/20 Community Grant round as they will fund the purchase of a multi-media lectern compatible with the screen/audio system.
