Making Skenes Creek safer for pedestrians

We’re improving safety for pedestrians at Skenes Creek, as part of the Australian and Victorian governments $100 million upgrade of the Great Ocean Road.
Great Ocean Road Upgrade
To make the Great Ocean Road safer the Australian and Victorian governments have invested $100 million in the Great Ocean Road Upgrade project.
This project includes resurfacing; replacement of bridges; improved safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians; improved visitor signage and the installation of new rains at over 100 locations.
Skenes Creek Improvements
To make it safer and easier to walk to the beach, over the next two months we will be making a series of improvements for pedestrians in Skenes Creek.
Pedestrian Refuge
We are installing a pedestrian refuge east of Skenes Creek Rd.
A pedestrian refuge is a raised concrete island that provides a safe and visible place for pedestrians to stand, before crossing. It includes a traffic island in the centre of the road where pedestrians can safely pause while they wait for traffic to pass from the opposite direction.
New centre-line marking will clearly show the east and west approaches to the refuge.
Gabian Wall
Work will include the construction of a 45 metre stone wall to be built along the ocean side of the road, east from the caravan park.
Kerbs, channels and drains We’ll install new kerb, channel and over 120m of drains.
Colac Otway Shire Works
The pedestrian refuge has been located to provide a link to a network of paths being developed by Colac Otway Shire. These paths will link to the bus stop at the Skenes Creek beach carpark, Muller Road and the service road.
