Great Ocean Road Update

VicRoads will be presenting an update of stabilisation works at the community meetings in Wye River tomorrow and Melbourne on Tuesday. For more information about current construction and upcoming events, see below.
Current construction
Paddy’s Path
Construction is progressing well at the roadside retaining wall site. More concrete panels were slotted into the steel pile frames this week, and horizontal drainage work continued. An additional 12 metres of framework has been installed at the east due to further landslide risks detected on the embankment.
500 metres east of Separation Creek
Work to install retaining walls below the road is continuing on schedule. The third wall should be in place by the end of next week, after which the replacement of the guard rail will commence.
Future works
Geological investigations into other medium risk landslide sites along the Great Ocean Road and possible long term solutions are continuing. VicRoads expects to carry out further stabilisation works from February next year, in conjunction with the ongoing retaining work at the current workzone below Paddy’s Path. Details about these plans will be made available this month.
Weather
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting possible showers over the weekend and next week. Our geotechnical equipment is constantly monitoring the site for movement and saturation. We don’t expect this to trigger the threshold for a road closure, however, we will not hesitate to do so if movement is detected and safety is compromised. The updated chart below shows movement and rainfall detected since late September.

The Great Ocean Road community is advised of changed traffic conditions for major events this summer.
Falls Music and Arts Festival
Road users are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the Falls Music and Arts Festival held off Erskine Falls Road near Lorne from 28 December to 1 January due to high traffic volumes. The speed limit will be reduced on Deans Marsh-Lorne Road.
Lorne Mountain to Surf fun run
Traffic will be managed along the Great Ocean Road from St Georges River to the pier in Lorne from 8am to 11am on Friday 6 January. The speed limit will be reduced and some delays are expected. There are no road closures during the Pier to Pub swim on Saturday 7 January, however, traffic volumes will be high.
