Tell Tales

26th December 2017

Well what an eventful race. Bumps, wind shifts and calms. Even before the start there were incidents with the big boat sailors demonstrating that they’re really Sydney-Hobart wannabes!

Light winds saw Boheme bumping up against It's Magic as they jostled for position before the start (or maybe just weren’t paying attention). Wild Rose, skippered by Sydney to Hobart Bill, muscled in on Stehpan and Karlijin on GOR Trading Post with no harm done - just a bit of paintwork to touch up. All this before the start – fortunately no damage or protests!

So to the race!! Boheme hit the start line to perfection (sadly disappointing Tim on duty boat as he had the recall flag ready to go).

As for the dinghies – well they’re a polite lot who bobbed around waiting for each other to hit the line. Wal finally crossed first in a light north-easterly followed close by Bruce &Geraldine on April Dancer.

It's Magic rounded the top mark first unfurling a ginormous red, white & blue spinnaker to catch the breeze downwind. A real spectacle with Quickmatch hoisting their bright yellow and red kite too followed by kits on all 5 flying fifteens and Trading Post.

Wind shifts can be important and the breeze swung westerly for twenty minutes – before returning to the east making the tactics very interesting.

The duty crew shortened the course – with It's Magic and Boheme crossing first and then the wind died to leave the fleet ghosting along – a bit like the super maxi’s going up the river Derwent in Hobart! Paul Cannon risked a dip to see just how far out in front of Quickmatch he could flap the spinnaker to make every second count when crossing the finish line.

Doug and son Rishi on Euffamism (left) and Greg with first time ever sail for crew Genevieve on Community Bank (right).

Great result for Doug and son Rishi taking his first sail on new (to the club) boat Euffamism. Also good sailing from new skipper Greg and crew on Apollo Bay Community Bank. Jamie on the Laser, Icebreaker, then flew across the line thanks to a little (Its) Magic.

And then back to the clubroom to tell tall tales, yarns and bumps – with not a protest in sight.

Good luck to Bill in the Sydney Hobart, Morgan in the Laser Nationals in Brisbane and Tim & Anton in the Flying Fifteen nationals at Mornington.
