The club precinct looked more like someone’s beautiful outside lounge area than its usual self. With beanbags strewn about and tables and chairs dotted around the lawn it was all set up for a little light refreshment as the Salty Dog pop up bar came alive for the Seafood Festival.

And with barely a hint of a breeze early on it looked like that was where the sailors would find themselves later in the afternoon.

But as is its prerogative, the breeze comes and the breeze goes and on Saturday it chose to fill in just enough to enjoy a sail. But not enough as to spoil a nice afternoon on the lawn enjoying the beautiful view across the harbor.

Doug and Gary had the difficult task of deciding whether there was enough wind to bother and chose wisely as the sea conditions were favourable for such a light breeze. So a port course with three triangles was planned and off they went to set it up.

Its Magic had the best of the start of the keel boat race as all boats lined up and crossed the line nicely. For once it was up to Boheme to do a bit of the chasing. The wind was light and seemed to float about the south, but it did just manage to stay consistent enough to allow for some ok sailing in the end and see Boheme take back the lead. Some of the big boats even got a little time under their asymmetric sails. Ten plus One and Wildrose had a very close tussle with 23 second between them at the finish. Unfortunately there was not enough wind for Interlude and the three wise gents were seen back in the harbour, enjoying a wee…. “chat” while waiting for a ride back to land.    

There were only three small boats out and it was lovely to see Bel, one of our adult Try Sailing participants, back for the day and having a great time on club Yngling Trading Post. Bel had Cambo on board as her crew and looked like she was not only enjoying the sail but was somehow managing to keep Cam under control!

Greg, Wayne and their guest (Community Bank) had a good opportunity to practice light wind sailing and persisted to the end. Well done guys.          

The other happening that was on this weekend was the Flying Fifteen state titles in Cairn Curren. Our club had three boats entered into the Classic division. April Dancer, Shiralee and Affrodite made the long haul and had a wonderful time by all accounts. It is rare for our sailors to get some time on a gently rippled lake and apparently it was a real change from bashing through the swells just outside our front door. Tim and Andrew (Affrodite) came away with the Classic trophy (well done) but congratulations also to Karljn and Stephan (Shiralee) and Bruce and Geraldine (April Dancer) who made sure it was a fight right to the end.
