Baseball in Colac reaches new heights
April 20, 2018

Baseball in Colac has been able to rise to A Grade heights following the installation of new and improved safety fencing at the club’s home field at Eastern Reserve.

While the club continues to recover from a brazen theft last week, it has in recent weeks enjoyed stepping up to play in the A Grade competition of the Geelong Baseball Association.

Colac Otway Shire Mayor Joe McCracken said the Council was pleased to have been able to complete an important upgrade to the baseball safety fence in time for Round One earlier this month.

“The original green fence had reached the end of its life and wasn’t up to the rigours of A Grade competition,” he said.

“It was dented, unattractive and some holes made it dangerous – especially with the higher grade of baseball resulting in faster pitching and a generally higher tempo of play.

“The club had been told the fence needed upgrading in order for it to be able to enter a team in the highest grade of the competition and we’re pleased we were able to do that.”

Cr McCracken said the club held a working bee to remove the old green fence and a Council contractor was used to install the new black, powder coated wire chain link.

“Whilst some may view baseball as a less prominent sport, it’s getting more and more popular, with a recent increase in junior participation,” he said.

“Our Council is committed to maintaining and improving our public sporting infrastructure and encouraging as many people in our community as possible to be active and live healthy lives.

“The club is really happy to have the facilities it now has and we’re all wishing its members the very best as the season progresses.”

Cr McCracken said last week’s theft of $5500 of equipment from the club’s batting shed was incredibly disappointing. He urged anyone with information to contact the Colac Police on (03) 5230 0000.
