Colac Otway Shire Awards Long-Term Waste Service Contract
May 14, 2019

Colac Otway Shire Council has secured an experienced provider to deliver all five components of its waste services for at least the next five years.

Wheelie Waste, the current provider of Council’s kerbside collection, has been awarded the shire’s waste contract from September 2020 for five years with the option to extend the agreement for a further two years.

Colac Otway Mayor Cr Jason Schram said Wheelie Waste would provide kerbside collection, disposal, operate transfer stations, waste-related customer service and waste ‘drop-off’ sites in the shire’s smaller communities.

“The request for tenders was structured to allow operators to tender for some or all components of the waste service to attract the best value tenders for our community,” Cr Schram said.

“The tender also includes the flexibility to adjust to changing waste and recycling processes, such as a fourth bin for glass collection, if required in the future.

“Wheelie Waste was one of six tenderers and the only one which tended for all five components of the service.

“The Wheelie Waste proposal included delivery to rural landfill sites, saving on landfill levy costs, with other benefits including greenwaste disposal flexibility, enabling participation in Waste to Energy programs.

“Importantly Wheelie Waste will take full responsibility for all waste disposal at a fixed price, for example if a recycling centre was not able to receive material – as happened when previous recycler SKM closed its doors – Wheelie Waste will make alternate arrangements at the tendered rate.

“Colac Otway is proud of the waste services it provides the community, particularly its partnership with Wheelie Waste during the recycling crisis which ensured no kerbside recycling material collected went to landfill,” he said.

“Council is pleased to award the new contract and secure these important services for the next five to seven years.”
