COSCommunity can help shape Colac Otway as a positive ageing community
November 16, 2016

Colac Otway Shire Council has embarked on an innovative social project to review and improve Colac Otway as an age friendly and dementia inclusive community.

People who are ageing or living with dementia, along with their families and carers, will be invited to have their say on a range of topics relating to them.

Chief Executive Officer Sue Wilkinson invited the participation of anyone affected by ageing or dementia to help improve the liveability of our community.

"Topics being covered in sessions across the district include social participation, respect and inclusion as well as fundamental services such as transport, health services and outdoor spaces," Ms Wilkinson said.

"This project gives our community the chance to consider and identify opportunities within the shire that support the social environment for ageing people and people with dementia to remain engaged in their community in a meaningful way.

"Engaging fully in life as you age is something we should aim for as individuals and as a community. The value of positive ageing means people live longer, healthier lives and enjoy a better quality of life."

Interest group members and positive ageing ambassadors are being sought to assist throughout the project.

The project will run for 12 months and a report of findings will be provided to Council and the Department of Health and Human Services to guide future services for our community.

For more information on the project or the opportunities as a group member or ambassador contact Peter Macdonald 5232 9424.
