Council to apply for funding for Colac Memorial Square playspace
September 28, 2017

Colac Otway Shire Council hopes to attract up to $100,000 of funding from the State Government to upgrade the Memorial Square playspace.

Council gave the green light for officers to apply for funding under Sport and Recreation Victoria’s annual Community Sport Infrastructure Fund.

In keeping with the draft Memorial Square Masterplan, the current playspace would be increased in size to provide a wider range of play experiences for children.

Curved bench seating and plantings would be installed around the perimeter of the playspace to create a physical barrier between the playspace and surrounding roads, which is a direct response to community feedback.

A range of play equipment would be installed to cater for children of all abilities, from toddlers to older children, to give the playspace universal appeal and access.

Acting Mayor Stephen Hart said there was strong community support for upgrades to the Memorial Square playspace.

“Our community really loves the Memorial Square playspace – it’s always in high demand during community events and especially in summer when people take along their lunch or dinner while the children play,” Cr Hart said.

“Its prominent position in the heart of town also makes it a great rest stop for visitors passing through Colac.

“Council is keen to start implementing the Memorial Square Masterplan and the playground is high on our list of priorities.”

The State Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Fund requires 2:1 funding from local government. Council has committed to consider a funding contribution through its 2018-19 budget process.

Council nominated several projects for the first round of the program, and the Memorial Square playspace was the project the State Government selected to go to the second round of consideration.

The entire project is estimated to cost $265,000.
