Community produces almost 40 scenarios for Colac’s growth as part of 2050

The first phase of community consultation for the Colac 2050 Growth Plan has produced almost 40 scenarios for housing growth in and around Colac.
The scenarios range from infilling within Colac’s township boundaries via subdivision and development of existing vacant blocks, through to expanding the township boundaries to allow the future rezoning of land.
Colac Otway Shire Council is putting the scenarios to the test via an online survey and Acting Mayor Stephen Hart encouraged the community to take part.
“During a series of workshops our community came up with a variety of scenarios for growth,” Cr Hart said.
“These scenarios were developed by business leaders, student leaders from Colac Secondary College and Trinity College, council and government agency representatives and the general community.
“They range from opening up new land west of the Colac High School, to creating a new estate along Deans Creek Road, to extending the Wyuna Estate at Elliminyt.”
The scenarios were presented to Council’s September meeting in the form of a ‘What we heard’ report, and were referred to the upcoming Citizens’ Jury process for further discussion.
Cr Hart said the survey would create a clearer picture of which scenarios were most preferred by our community.
“By the time our Citizens’ Jury sits they’ll be in a position to debate each scenario in detail knowing how our community rates each one,” Cr Hart said.
“This will make the jury’s job easier as they form their recommendations on how Colac should grow up to the year 2050 and achieve our aspirational population target of 20,000 people.”
